How to Make a Makeup Brush Cleaner

Clean makeup brushes extend their life, improve makeup application and prevent the growth of bacteria. Investing in quality makeup brushes makes a difference in the way your makeup goes on and improves the finished look. Cleaning your brushes with a homemade cleaning solution only takes a few steps and a few inexpensive household items.

Items Needed:

  • 1 cup distilled water

  • 2 Tbsp isopropyl rubbing alcohol

  • 1 Tbsp baby shampoo

Instructions

  1. Pour 1 cup of distilled water into a small, glass bowl and add 2 Tbsp. of isopropyl rubbing alcohol. Mix the ingredients together. You can substitute distilled water with boiled tap water. Pour water into a pot and boil on the stove for 20 minutes. Allow water to cool and use in the place of distilled water.

  2. Add 1 Tbsp baby shampoo to the mixture of water and alcohol. Mix well, but do not make foam or bubbles. Use any brand of baby shampoo as long as it is gentle.

  3. Dip the bristles of the brush into the mixture and gentle swirl to remove makeup and oil buildup. Thoroughly saturate the bristles for best results.

  4. Rinse the brush under warm, running water until the water runs clear. Avoid holding the brush upside down under the water. This causes water to enter the ferrule, the area of the brush that holds the bristles into place.

  5. Squeeze excess water from the bristles and reshape the head of the brush. Lay the brush flat on a clean, dry towel and allow them to dry completely. This typically takes 8 to 10 hours. Using damp brushes ruins makeup application and can make powders cake together.

  6. Fluff brush bristles by sweeping the brush gently across the palm of your hand. Repeat this process every 2 to 4 weeks or as needed to extend the life of your brushes, and prevent transferring bacteria to your face.
