How to Make a Skype Video Call

Skype is a great resource for people who are traveling, or just geographically separated from friends or family. The software can be used with a microphone to make phone calls, but can also be used with a webcam to make video calls.

  1. Open the Skype software by double-clicking the icon for Skype, then log in using your username and password.

  2. Click the "Tools" option at the top of the window, and select "Options" to open the options menu.

  3. Click on "Video" - this is a blue icon on the left side of the options menu.

  4. Check the box next to "Enable Skype Video." This will give you the option to make video calls rather than just audio calls.

  5. Select your webcam from the device list and click "Test Webcam." This will allow you to adjust settings to make sure your picture is clear and that your camera is working properly. Click "Save."

  6. If you do not see your webcam listed, you may have to install a driver from the webcam manufacturer to make it work with your computer. Close Skype, install any drivers you may need, then start back at Step 1.

  7. Start making video calls! You can either call someone and then select "Start Video" once you are in the call, or simply right click their name in your contacts list and select "Video."

  8. If you want to call someone not in your contacts list, you can search for their name and add them. Alternatively, if you know their Skype number you can add them to your contacts list manually.
