How to Make a Tack Trunk

A tack trunk will allow you to store essential items for your horse such as hoof picks, ointments and leg wraps. Purchasing a tack trunk can be quite expensive, but you can create your own tack trunk by simply using a footlocker.

Things you will need:

  • Foot locker

  • Tape measure

  • Pencil

  • Pine boards

  • Cross cut saw

  • Electric screw driver

  • Wood screws

  • Casters

  • Sandpaper

  • Tack rag

  • Foam brushes

  • Wood stain

  • Flat head screws

  1. Open the foot locker. Begin measuring your dimensions by starting at the left end of the locker from the top to the bottom. Jot down your measurements.

  2. Cut your pine board. Following the measurements that you took, cut the pine board using a cross cut saw.

  3. Attach the boards to the foot locker. Position the pine boards on the back of the foot locker and drill them in with wood screws.

  4. Close the lid on the foot locker. Turn the foot locker over so that the pine boards are on top. Next, connect a caster to each of the boards and secure with wood screws.

  5. Turn the trunk  back over. Unhook the door and take measurements of its width. Next, cut pine boards to fit those measurements.

  6. Sand the boards. Using sandpaper, sand the pine boards and wipe off the sawdust with a tack rag.

  7. Stain your pine boards. Apply the stain with a foam brush and wipe off the excess with a towel.

  8. Paint your trunk. If you choose to paint your trunk, you must sand it first. Remove the excess dust after sanding and paint as desired.
