How to Make a Tile Patio Table

You can update your backyard patio by tiling your existing worn patio table. Pick you favorite tiles that will give your old patio a refreshing new facelift.  This project is fairly easy, and does not require a lot of money or time to create a beautiful new look for your backyard patio.

Items needed:

  • Tape measure, straight edge

  • Two 1/2 inch plywood

  • Jigsaw, drill

  • Adhesive

  • Clamps

  • Roller

  • Waterproof membrane

  • Sandpaper

  • Thinset

  • Trowel

  • Damp sponge

  1. Measure the old patio table and draw the outline shape of the table on the two 1/2 inch plywood pieces.  Cut two of the shapes with a jigsaw.

  2. Apply the adhesive to the tops of the plywood shapes and align the edges together.  Clamp them together and allow at least six hours for the plywood to completely dry. Remove the clamps and sand the edges with sandpaper. Apply two coats of the waterproof membrane with a roller.  Wait at least 24 hours for the membrane to dry.

  3. Draw a design on the plywood and divide the plywood into four sections.  Apply thinset to one of the four sections with the trowel.  Lay the tile, one section at a time until all four sections are completed.  Allow the tiled tabletop to dry for at least 12 hours.

  4. Grout the tile joints and wait at least two hours for the grout to set, remove the excess grout from the tiles with the damp sponge.

  5. Put the completed tiled table top on the old patio table and use the drill to secure it with screws.
