How to Make a Wooden Floating Shelf

Floating shelves are a lovely feature that can be used to accent a living or dining room. Installation is fairly quick and easy and you can even have the wood cut for you at your local home improvement store, saving you even more time.

  1. Choose the room for your shelves. Determine which room you would like to install your floating shelves.

  2. Choose the color of wood for the shelves. Once you have decided which room to install the shelves in, select the color of wood that best matches the decor for that room.

  3. Build the frames for your shelves. Use wood glue to attach your boards at a 90-degree angle. Make sure they meet at the edges. Use a wood screw to secure the attachment. Continue building your frame by attaching the panels at a 90-degree angle as well. This will establish your corner. Once you have finished you should have a rectangular shape.

  4. Place boards inside the frame.  Position three boards every 10-inches along the inner portion of the frame. This gives it the floating effect. Use wood glue and screws to attach the boards.

  5. Connect the panels. Secure the birch plywood panel to the top and bottom of the frame using wood glue and wood screws. Surround the sides with the birch plywood panels and the front with one strip of birch. The end result will be a recessed frame surrounded by plywood, which in essence become your floating shelves.
