How to Make an English Language Course
Creating an English language course is not very different than creating a course for any other language. All language courses need to have a well planned curriculum where the objectives are clearly outlined and the expectations can realistically be achieved.
What You'll Need:
- Computer
- Pen
- Paper
- Textbooks
- English language games
- Decide on the length of time as well as frequency in which your course will meet. The length of time can range from one month long, while some courses last two or more months. To give the students a fair advantage, you'll need to meet at least twice a week to maintain the language skills taught in the course.
- Create an outline of the goal or objective of your English language course. Determine if the course will work to enhance student's usage of slang and idioms or whether it will attempt to improve fluency and increase vocabulary.
- Select the course materials you'll use. Pick a textbook along with a workbook. For this type of course its most helpful to select a textbook that has a either a CD or other listening component along with it to assist students with pronunciation.
- Create your course syllabus. Determine how quick you are going to work through the materials each week and how much homework you plan to assign.
- Select an English language game for each class session. Games help to loosen students up while assisting them with speaking English in a more relaxed manner. The games you select should work to reinforce the current lesson for that day.
- Create your exam schedule. Generally, language courses will have a weekly quiz and many courses have at minimum of two exams during the entire length of the course: one in the middle and one at the end. Determine the frequency you want to have tests and ensure that you make that clear to the students.
- Make ample copies of the syllabus for the number of students in the course. Ensure that the syllabus has the name of the textbook that you plan to use, any homework assignments and the exam schedule.
