How to Manually Light Oil Burnham Boilers

Modern Burnham boilers have an automatic power grid that lights the boiler system for your home or building. In the event that your boiler is not operable or is operating at a diminished capacity, learn some tips that will assist in restarting your boiler.

Items Needed:

  • Oil canister

  • Nylon tube

  • Screwdriver

  1. Locate the small valve on the upper right hand corner. This is the radiator or boiler’s bleeding valve. The valve literally lets off steam from the internal site of the radiator so that the air and steam may clear from the boiler allowing free air range inside the boiler. This allows the user to easily self ignite the boiler.

  2. Review the usual means for turning on a valve under pressure. First, use a screwdriver to gently open the valve until you hear a hissing sound from the valve itself. The hissing sound relates to the air water mixture being released from the boiler. This process of releasing the gas mixture will enable you to use the oil canister fitted with the piping to your manual lighter area along the bleeder valve with safety.

  3. Insert a thin hose to the bleeder valve from of the oil canister. Use this oil for igniting the boiler from the feeder tube. As the oil is pumped from the oil canister to the bleeder valve the boiler flame will ignite the boilers internal combustion; similar to a match lighting a pilot light on a stove.

  4. Ignite the boiler area by setting an oil tube into the bleeder feed area. The oil combined with the release of hot air will act as combustion for the boiler. The oil compartment is now filled and the pump should work to pump the oil to the motor. Turn the boiler back on and after a short time, your boiler should be running.
