How to Measure Radiation from House Appliances
People may not be aware that some of their household appliances may actually be giving off radiation in the form of electromagnetic radiation. This form of radiation may not be as powerful when emitted from household appliances, but can still pose a health risk. Testing radiation levels is a good idea.
- Purchase a Gauss meter. A Gauss meter is a device used to detect radiation levels and can be easily purchased online. Checking your local electronics store is also an option when looking to buy a Gauss meter. There are many types of Gauss meters available to choose from. The more expensive models usually are more accurate with their readings.
- Take all magnets away from any appliance that you want to test. This is usually an issue if you are testing an appliance close to your refrigerator.
- Power on your Gauss meter and be sure that it has a zero reading before you begin testing the appliance. A zero baseline reading ensures a more accurate radiation level reading.
- Run the appliance you are testing as you normally would.
- Move the Gauss meter along the appliance that you are testing. When you come across the highest reading, keep the Gauss meter there to get an accurate readout.
- Test the appliance multiple times to ensure that you will get an accurate readout. Record all your readings and you will find out the average level of radiation that the appliance is emitting. Between running the multiple tests be sure to power the Gauss meter on and off to be sure that you get the best readings possible.
