How to Measure Women's and Girl's Clothing Sizes

Knowing your measurements before shopping for clothes is most recommended. Since both girl's and women's clothing have such a wide range of sizes available, knowing the proper measurements will be less stressful. Use this guide for measuring both women and girl body types.

  1. Measure the waist and hips. Take a tape measure and measure around the waist in a full circle. You will have to make sure that it reaches all the way around the waist before taking the measurement. Do the same to the hips. While measuring, try not to wear bulky clothing, as it can increase the size of your natural hips. After you take note of the hip size, keep in mind you can go up to two clothing sizes since most material will stretch and form on your curves. For younger girls, follow the same steps but expect much smaller results.

  2. Measure the bust. You might need to have someone help you when you measure this area. You will need to lift your arms and have someone measure fully around your chest and bust line. It will have to be on point since making the wrong measurement might mean you are purchasing your clothes too big or too small. Do this same step for girls as well as measuring their height. Let them lean against a wall while you measure from their feet to their head.

  3. Write a measuring chart. Be sure to track your measurements so you don’t forget the exact numbers. This will be especially useful when you are shopping online, since you won’t be able to try the clothes on until after you get them.
