How to Measure for Bike Helmets
Bike helmets do not only protect you from injury, but can save your life if you get into an accident. It is important that you not only get a comfortable fitting helmet, but that you get the right size helmet that will give you full protections. Each head shape is different and can affect the fit of your helmet.
Things You'll Need:
- Tape measure
- Helmet manufacture's sizing chart
- Use a flexible measuring tape to measure the circumference of your head. Put the measuring tap right above your eyebrows and snugly wrap it around your head.
- Look on the helmet manufacture's sizing chart and find the measurement for your head circumference.
- Try on the helmet and adjust it to your size. Gently push the helmet down so it fits snugly on your head. If the helmet fits too tight or too loose on our head, you will need to adjust or replace the helmet pads. Position the helmet so that it is level on your head. Fasten the chinstrap and make any adjustments needed to make sure it feels comfortable. Make sure the "Y" on the side straps sit right below your ears.
- Do the "finger test" to check if the chinstrap is fitting correctly. Place two fingers underneath your chin and between the chinstraps. Two fingers should fit comfortable, and the chinstrap should not be uncomfortably tight, but feel snug.
- Check your helmet to make sure that it touches every surface on your head. It should fit tight, but not cause pain or be uncomfortable. The helmet is too small if there is any space between the top of your head and the helmet.
- Shake your head around, up and down and back and forth. If the helmet moves around it is too big.
- Try on different size helmets until you find one that fits properly all the way around.
