How to Measure for Hardwood Floors

Putting hardwood floors in your home can increase the value of your home and make the interior look beautiful. It is important to measure the room to know how much flooring you will need to purchase. This article will instruct you on how to measure for hardwood floors.

How to Measure for Hardwood Floors

  1. Divide the room into rectangles or squares. Measure the length and width of each section. Round the entire number to the nearest foot if any part of the measurements includes inches. For examples, if you measure 13 feet 7 inches, round up to 14 feet.

  2. Multiply the width by the length for each section to get the square footage of each section.

  3. You can use this formula for each room in the home. If you are laying hardwood floors in the kitchen, make sure to measure and calculate the areas under the stove and refrigerator.

  4. Add all of the measurements together to get the total square footage for the entire room. Add five percent to the total for angled or waste cuts.

  5. The hardwood flooring is sold with the square footage on the box. Divide the square footage you obtained by the number on the box. This total will be the number of boxes you will have to purchase.
