How to Measure for Kitchen Flooring
Replacing an old kitchen floor can bring new life to a kitchen. There are many designs and styles but if you do not know how to measure your floor, then you will not know how much material to buy. Kitchen flooring is often sold in square feet so you will need to know how many square feet your kitchen floor measures.
Things you’ll need:
- Tape measure
- Calculator
- Measure the length of the room using your tape measure. A rule of thumb to remember is that an odd measurement should be rounded up to the nearest foot. An example would be a room that measured 8.5 feet in length will need to be rounded up to 9 feet.
- Measure the width of your room using your tape measure. Remember to always measure at the widest part of your floor because space underneath your refrigerator and any other moveable appliances have to be accounted for.
- Use your calculator to multiply your two measurements together. This will give you the square footage of the room. This in turn will be how much flooring to get when you go to purchase the material. So if your room measures 12 feet by 12 feet then you will need 144 square feet of flooring material to cover the entire floor.
- Take your tape measure and measure your L-shaped kitchen in two seperate parts if you do not mind having a seam in the floor. If you choose not to have a seam and want to keep it all in one piece, then you will need to measure the floor as if it was a square and just cut away the excess flooring.
- Multiply the square footage of your kitchen by the cost per square foot of your material and this will give you a rough idea of the cost of replacing the flooring in your kitchen.
