How to Measure for a Basement Replacement Window
Basement windows are often more prone to leaking and cracks, simply because they are so low to the ground. Replacing the windows in a basement can greatly improve the energy efficiency in a home. Measuring for basement replacement windows is a bit more complicated than measuring for other windows in a home.
Things You Will Need:
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Paper
- Measure the width of the basement window. If the window does not open, simply measure across the window from each end of the frame so as to include the frame in your measurements. If the window opens, open the window to its furthest distance and measure the width from the inside of the window frame. If you opt to replace the opening window with glass blocks, include the frame in your measurement, as well.
- Measure the height of the window. For windows that open, open the window and measure the distance from the top window track to the corresponding track on the bottom of the window. If the window does not open, or if you are replacing the window with glass blocks, measure the full height of the window, including the height of the frame itself.
- Measure the depth of the window opening. If the basement window opens, you will need to measure the distance between the inside blind stop and the outside blind stop. If you are installing glass blocks in the place of your window, you will need to measure the depth of the window opening, from the outer edge of the basement wall to the inner edge. This will determine the size of the glass blocks that you need to purchase.
