How to Mix Paint Colors Into Brown

Many people know that you can create new colors by simply combining the primary colors of red, yellow and blue. All of the other colors are created by some combination of these three primary colors. You can use these three basic colors in order to create any shade of brown that you wish.

  • Learn about the color wheel. Most people remember seeing the color wheel in an elementary art class. It can be a useful tool when you are figuring out how to mix paint. If you are unaware of which colors are primary and which are secondary, a color wheel can help you to categorize the colors and figure out which ones you need to mix in order to create brown.

  • Start with the basics. This is a simple way to use the color wheel to create brown. If you want to avoid separating primary and secondary colors, it is possible to create a very basic shade of brown by simply finding two colors that are opposite of each other on the color wheel and mixing them.

  • Mix the three primary colors. You can simply mix yellow, blue and red together to create brown. Begin by mixing blue and yellow to create the color green. Combine green to red and you will create a brown paint.

  • Create a deep, dark shade of brown by mixing red, a primary color, and orange, a secondary color.

  • Combine complementary colors. Two complementary colors together will create brown. Some examples of complementary colors include red and green, purple and yellow, and orange and blue.

  • Adjust the shade of your brown paint. You can add a touch of black paint in order to darken your brown paint. Likewise, if you add white, it will lighten the shade of brown.
