How to Mix and Add Engine Coolant

Coolant is very important to keeping your engine running properly. Your engine will overheat very quickly without the proper amount of engine coolant. It's not hard to mix the proper amount of water with engine coolant. You should always monitor your coolant level, especially in the summer months.

Things You'll Need:

  • Vehicle Owners Manual

  • Towel

  • Funnel

  • Coolant

  • Water

  1. Open the hood of your vehicle. Usually there is a lever on the inside of your vehicle near the passenger seat. The location of this lever will vary for each model of vehicle. Refer to your owner’s manual for specific instruction.

  2. Find the coolant reservoir. You might also need to use your owner’s manual for locating the coolant reservoir.

  3. Remove the reservoir cap with a towel. Make sure you don't remove the cap while the engine is still hot. The hot coolant will spill over and could easily burn your hand.

  4. Mix the coolant and water in a small container. The amount of water you mix will vary depending upon the brand of coolant you bought. There will be directions labeled somewhere on the coolant jug. Make sure to use a funnel when pouring the water and coolant into the small container.

  5. Pour the mixture of coolant and water in the reservoir using the same funnel. Make sure you only pour enough to fill the reservoir to the full line. The full line won't be all the way at the top of the reservoir. Look to the side of the reservoir, there will be a full line clearly marked.

  6. Place the coolant cap back on the reservoir.

  7. Start your vehicle and let it idle for a few minutes. Make sure no coolant is leaking out.

  8. Place the hood back down and shut the vehicle off.
