How to Model for Department Stores

Becoming a model for a department store may be a matter of timing, since there are many different things a department store uses a model for. Depending on the size of the department store, a local store may not have the authority to hire models. Perseverance is often the key for a model to land a job.

  1. Create a modeling portfolio by working with a professional photographer. You will use the portfolio to help you get an interview at a department store for a modeling position. Have the photographer take pictures of you wearing a variety of clothing in different settings. Review the photos to make sure you are happy with the quality.

  2. Make copies of your portfolio and decide which department stores to apply with. You may have a better chance of landing a modeling job if you apply with stores that are small franchises or locally owned. Major stores usually work with well-known agencies that represent models.

  3. Contact a department store and ask to speak with someone who is in charge of hiring models. If you get an interview, take your portfolio and resume with you. Go through the interview process and ask when you can expect to hear back.

  4. Find out if there are other types of modeling jobs available if you do not receive an offer to model in your preferred department of the store. These may include many different departments that the store frequently advertises. Apply with other department stores in your area if you still do not receive a job offer.

  5. Search for an agent to represent you if you are unable to land a department store modeling job on your own. Look online to find agents and see if you can get an appointment. You may have to just leave a copy of your portfolio to try and get appointment, depending on the size of the agency.
