How to Moonlight as a Bookkeeper

A bookkeeper consists of having knowledge in basic accounting, including accounts receivables and payables. Moonlighting as a bookkeeper brings in some extra cash and allows you to gain employment in accounting firms. Moonlight as a bookkeeper by learning basic accounting and obtaining experience in the field.


  1. Create a contact letter in order for clients to know where and when to contact you for services. Make sure that you include the types of services you offer. Highlight your experience and skills on your contact letter to let potential clients know that you have the skills needed to work as a bookkeeper at their office.

  2. Send your contact letter to several small accounting companies. Mention that you can volunteer your services for a few days to let the business see what you can do as a bookkeeper. You might get hired once you've demonstrated you can perform the work.

  3. Apply for a position as a bookkeeper by sending out your resume to accounting companies and businesses looking to hire. Work at as a "full charge" bookkeeper for at least a year in order to obtain a position a regular bookkeeper.

  4. Locate small firms that have five employees since the firm may more than likely hire a part-time bookkeeper rather than a full-time one. Small firms in the beginning stage may not have the funds to hire a full-time bookkeeper.

  5. Prepare for the interview. Make mention of your skills during the interview to let the interviewer know that as a bookkeeper you can do the work.
