How to Mount a Bathroom Wall Cabinet
Bathroom cabinet kits are readily available in assembled form from a home improvement store. The primary difference between mounting a wall cabinet and a floor cabinet in your bathroom is that a wall cabinet must be supported entirely by the mounting screws. A homeowner can typically perform this task with the help of an assistant.
Things You'll Need:
- Tape measure
- Stud finder
- Pencil
- Hammer
- 2-foot level
- Two 3-inch nails
- Drill with Phillips-head bit
- 3-inch wood screws
- Spackle
- Select the location for your wall cabinet. You will typically install this type of cabinet on the wall behind the toilet. The bottom of the cabinet should be at least 2 feet above the top of the toilet tank.
- Measure the available space for your bathroom cabinet with a tape measure to determine the maximum allowable size of the cabinet. The maximum width is the width of the bare wall behind the toilet tank, and the maximum height will be the distance from the bottom of the cabinet to the ceiling.
- Use a stud finder to locate the studs within the area where you will install the cabinet. These studs are typically 16 inches apart and will be needed to secure the cabinet to the wall. Drive a 3-inch nail halfway into each stud within the cabinet installation area. The nails should be in the middle of the studs at the level of the bottom of the cabinet.
- Lift the cabinet, and place it on top of the nails while an assistant holds the cabinet in place.
- Place the mounting screws into the screw holes of the brace that came with your cabinet. Align the brace with a nail, and fasten the wood screws to the stud with a power screwdriver. Repeat this step for each brace to mount the cabinet securely to the wall.
