How to Mount a Truck Bike Rack
You love to ride your bike. Wouldn’t it be nice to ride on trails in different cities or states? When you go on vacation, wouldn’t it be nice to take your bike with you? This is all possible with a bike rack. Here is how you can mount a bike rack on your truck so you can take your bike with you wherever you go.
First, you will need to purchase a bike rack at your local automotive supply store or specified bicycle accessory store. The simplest and cheapest bike racks are ones that apply pressure to the sides of the truck bed. They are able to be removed and replaced easily. Permanent racks are also available and a little more expensive.
Always read the written instructions attached to the rack before beginning to install the rack.
The two ends of the main bar have pads that will be placed against the inside of the truck bed walls.
Place the bar approximately 4 - 5 inches from the cab.
Begin tightening the screw until the bar is firmly secured. Tug on the bar to make sure it is secure.
Next, position the mounts on the bar. If you have two mounts, this will be easier. If you want to carry four bikes, you will need to install four mounts on the bar. Be sure that the mounts are placed in far enough that the bike will not hang over the bedrail. Attaching the first and third mount high and the second and fourth mount low will give you more space for handle bars and pedals.
Be careful not to over-tighten the quick release mount for your bike. This is a common error. If you over-tighten the screws, the quick release mount will not work properly.
Remove the front wheel of each bike before attaching the bike to the mount. The front wheels can be placed in the space between the rack rod and the cab.
