How to Move Computer File Storage Systems
Properly storing data is crucial since improper handling will lead to data loss. Computers have revolutionized data storage. A digital file storage system can either be in the computer or in an external hard drive. Exercise caution during the transfer of digital data because it is difficult to recover data.
Requirements
- A computer
- A data storage device such as an external hard disk or a flash drive
Instructions
- Turn on the computer and locate the data or documents. In most cases, documents are stored by default in a folder called ‘My documents.’ A fast way to open the file is by clicking the start button, then clicking on ‘My documents’ from the list.
- Wait for the folder to open and look for the specific file that you want to transfer. If the file is in a different location, and you have forgotten where it is, you can search for it using the folders search engine to locate the file.
- Insert the storage device of choice into the computer. If you choose to store the files on a CD or DVD, open the drive, slide the disc in, and wait for the computer to view whether the disc is in good condition. For those choosing to use a flash drive or an external hard drive, place the flash disk into the computer’s USB ports or the USB cable from the external hard drive to the USB slots and wait for the computer to view your device.
- Go to the files that you wish to move to the new storage devices, and right click on them. The result will be a range of options where you should click on the ‘copy’ option. Go back to the storage device and open it. Here, right click on it again and then click on ‘paste’ from the options provided. Alternately, you may open both folders and simply “Drag and Drop” the folders. This will copy and paste the folder or document.
- Give the computer a few seconds to complete the transfer. Close all of the windows and move the mouse cursor to the bottom right of the screen. Right click the hardware icon in the tray to safely remove the external device. Remove the device safely and store in a secure place.
