How to Negotiate With Auto Insurance Companies

By negotiating with two or more auto insurance companies, a driver can get a better price for a policy. It is easier to negotiate with multiple insurance agents so the driver can make them compete with each other. It is also possible to negotiate with just one agent to try and get a lower price for a policy.

  1. Go online and look for a website that has auto insurance quotes. Type in the year, make and model of your car and generate a comparison report. Print the report so you can use it when you start to negotiate with local auto insurance agents.

  2. Contact an auto insurance company in your city and ask to speak with an agent. Find out the cost for an auto insurance policy for your vehicle. Thank the agent for the price quote and advise that you will call back later in the day if you decide to buy the policy.

  3. Call at least one more auto insurance agent and get a quote for a policy. Review the online auto insurance report to compare the prices with the agent’s quote. Start to negotiate with the agent if you can get a better price online.

  4. Inform the agent that you can get a better deal on the policy elsewhere. If the agent will not offer you a price break you should end the call and try to negotiate with the first agent you spoke with. If the agent offers you a better rate than what you can get online, advise that you will be in touch later in the day with your decision.

  5. Call the first agent back and negotiate the price. If you are able to get the agent to drop the rate below the second agent’s price you may want to accept the offer. You can also continue to negotiate with both agents until they will no longer lower the price.
