How to Negotiate With a Wedding DJ

You know the songs played at your wedding reception will create unforgettable moments in your lives and the guests'.  A good DJ can effortlessly calm a crowd or get the party started.  A bad DJ can make the entire reception a disaster.  With this in mind, cheaper is only better in price, not quality.

  1. Get quotes from several music entertainment companies.  You can find reputable DJs listed on MerchantCircle.

  2. Find out if prices are determined through a corporate office or if the DJ has some say in the cost of his services.  Corporate prices are difficult to change, but the tip for a DJ is something that can always be a negotiation tool.

  3. Show the DJ the price quotes from other companies.  If the DJ is higher, ask for a price match.

  4. Barter with the DJ.  Ask to reduce the price during dinner because you will be providing a full meal with cake to follow.  All the DJ needs to do is push play for dinner music to begin and sit down to eat.

  5. Offer to pay the DJ cash.  If a DJ has to be paid through a company, they only earn a flat rate.  If you add cash on the side, you may only be charged for a few hours of service.

  6. Offer to create a playlist in advance.  This will lessen the DJ's work and may save you some money.

  7. Eliminate flashy lights and disco balls.  Tell the DJ you need to save money.  You might get those fun extras for free.
