How to Obtain a Small Business Grant

How to Obtain Small Business Funding

The most difficult part of starting a new small business is to obtain the capital necessary to cover the business start-up expenses. In most cases, business owners need to obtain some sort of small business funding in order to cover these costs. Small business owners have various options available when it comes to obtaining funding.

  • Use your personal finances. If you have the ability to provide personal capital for your business start-up, it will likely be the quickest way for your small business to receive the funding that it needs. Consider using some of your own personal savings in order to get your business started. Remember to pay yourself back a portion of your investment each month, just as you would a traditional small business loan.

  • Create a partnership. If you have friends, family members or business contacts who are interested in your idea, consider asking whether they are interested in becoming partners. Each partner can then contribute a certain amount of funding to the small business and share a portion of the business profits. Write out the terms of the partnership before exchanging any money.

  • Apply for grants. State and local government often offer small business grants as an incentive to bring new businesses to the economy. Do some research to find grants that are available to the type of business that you are starting. Complete the grant application process and be sure to follow all of the terms of the grant funding. Grants are an excellent funding option for a small business because the money does not need to be repaid.

  • Apply for a loan. If necessary, you can obtain a small business loan from a bank or credit union. You will need to present your business idea to the lending offers at the bank and complete a lengthy loan application process. Do some research to find a bank that offers agreeable loan terms and a low interest rate.
