How to Obtain a Handyman License
From replacing a damaged door to fixing a leaky faucet, home repair needs are abundant. A handyman is someone with the skill to do a variety of minor repairs around the house. If you wish to start your own handyman business, take the steps to becoming a licensed handyman. Being licensed will make you stand out as a professional and attract customers to your handyman business.
- Contact your state license board to determine whether you need a contractor’s license. Some states require a contractor’s license to be a handyman. To obtain a contractor’s license you must have a certain number of years of experience in construction, or a college degree in a construction related field, and you will have to pass a test. In areas that do not require you to have a contractors license, you will be limited in the amount of money you can make per job.
- Choose your business name; it will be necessary for filling out the licensing paperwork.
- Decide on a location from where you will run your business. Many handyman businesses are run out of the owner’s home. If you are going to run a home-based business, you will need a home occupation permit. Contact your local city hall for information on how to fill out an application for a home occupation permit. Once your permit is approved, you can apply for a business license.
- Complete a business license application for each city in which you expect to work. Some cities have their business license application online to fill out and mail in, or you can visit the city hall offices to pick one up. A yearly fee must be submitted with the business license application as well. Once your application is approved, you will be a licensed handyman.
