How to Offer Computer Classes to the Elderly

Times are changing and people are finding that knowing how to operate a computer is imperative. Many elderly people would love to learn how to use the computer. Some do not know where to find classes or people who would take the time to show them how. There are things that you could do to offer computer classes to the elderly.

  • Find out if a computer class would be a good idea in your area. Visit nursing homes, assisted living locations and senior centers to find if there are any elderly individuals interested in taking a class.

  • Visit homes in your neighborhood where elderly individuals live. Ask them if they would be interested in taking a computer class. Make sure you write all individuals name on a list. When you get everything set up, you will know who to revisit about taking the classes.

  • Check with your local community college to find out if they need help with starting a computer class for the elderly. Many times a community college would like to offer classes to the elderly, but do not have the staff to do it.

  • Check with the board of education in your county to find out if you can offer a class at one of their schools. Most high schools and now many elementary schools have computer rooms that would be perfect for classes in the community.

  • Make arrangements to use a computer class for your students. Make sure you go through the proper channels with the owner of the location. It is important that you know how many computers will be in the room and whether you or someone else will be locking up at the end of class.

  • Print out flyers to advertise your classes. It is a good idea to put an ad in the newspaper to let individuals know about your classes. Most elderly individuals still read the newspaper since most likely they do not know how to use the Internet yet.
