How to Oil Paint

Oil painting requires patience because it can take days or weeks for a single layer of paint to dry.  Each step you take will also require the correct manipulation of paint, oil and thinner so that you get the right consistency.  In the end, the vibrant colors and control will formulate a beautiful picture.

  1. Open your windows to provide good ventilation.  You may also want to set up some fans.

  2. Lay a tarp under your canvas and don a pair of old clothes.

  3. Put a canvas on your easel. Adjust the easel to a comfortable height for you.

  4. Prepare a jar of medium oil (the turpentine to oil ratio should be 2:1) and a jar of turpentine.

  5. Prepare your paint.  Squeeze some of your desired colors onto your palette.

  6. Mix your paints to create the desired shades.  Start with a little of each color and add more if necessary.

  7. Add medium oil to your paint.  The more you add, the thinner your paint will be (this is good for delicate washes).

  8. Paint your first layer to create a rough sketch.  This should be a very thin layer without any details included.

  9. Wait for the first layer to dry.  This will take anywhere from a few days to a week depending upon how much oil and turpentine you use.

  10. Once your work is dry, you can paint broad plains of color. Allow this to dry before filling in the details.

  11. Make sure to thoroughly clean your brushes and supplies each time you are done painting for the day. Continue adding details and layers until the painting is complete. Do not remove the painting from the easel until it is completely dry.
