How to Open a Clogged Drain

There are several items that can get down a drain and cause it to become clogged. Items such as soap scum, hair, dirt and other types of debris can easily make a drain susceptible of being clogged. It is best to always deal with a clogged drain as soon as possible to keep it from becoming an uncontrollable situation.

Items Needed:

  • Drano/Liquid Plumr

  • Boiling water

  • Plumber's snake

  • Trash can

  • Gloves

Instructions:

  1. Boil water and pour it down the drain. This works to break up any debris or clogs in the drain if the drain is not completely clogged. Allow the drain to set for about 15 minutes without being touched.

  2. Use a plunger to plunge the sink if the hot water does not work. Put the plunger over the drain and slowly plunge it back and forth. The suction should open up your drain.

  3. Purchase a bottle of Drano or Liquid Plumr. You may have to resort to purchasing a chemical solution if the hot water and plunging does not work. Read the instructions on the bottle carefully. Be sure to wear gloves when dealing with these types of chemicals to avoid skin burns.

  4. Clean the drain trap out. Put a bucket under the drain trap to catch any water or debris that falls from the trap. The trap looks like a U- or J-shape, located under the sink. Clean the drain completely out.

  5. Use a plumber’s snake to clean out the drain. Stick the snake down the drain and turn the crank on the opposite end. Push forcefully down the drain with the snake to free up the debris or blockage. Make sure you pull everything out and dispose of it properly. Consider calling in a professiona if this step fails and you are unable to get the drain clear.
