How to Open a Maternity Clothes Store

Maternity clothing is a product that will always sell. There are usually not many retail maternity stores, so competition should not be a problem. You will want to focus on funding before anything else. Make sure to have a well-designed business plan to secure the funding you will need.

  1. Research demographics for your area and create a business plan. Starting a retail business is not cheap, and you will have to have a well thought and detailed business plan to qualify for a loan. You will want to include a letter of recommendation, resume, and cost analysis.  It's best to have a professional help you create your plan, as without funding you won't be able to continue with your retail store.

  2. Choose a location for your business. Although you can rent, buying is better in the long term. This is especially true for small business owners. By buying, eventually you will have your store paid for. If you rent, you will always have a rental fee.

  3. Get your business and resale license. You will need a business license to operate in your area. You will need a resale license to order wholesale. This is also a good time to check into business insurance, office setup, and business phone number.

  4. Buy your stock. Use the Internet to find new wholesale contacts for maternity clothing. You can also search for trade shows. With trade shows, you will need to physically go there and talk to different vendors. Make sure to bring your resale license with you.

  5. Set up your stock and equipment in your retail location. Install any signs. Purchase cash registers.

  6. After you have your stock, you should be ready to open your business.
