How to Open a Pageant Dress Shop

Running a pageant dress shop requires the owner to do a lot of work to gain a loyal clientele. Creating custom dresses for pageant contestants is one way to have an advantage over shops that sell only stock dresses. Advertising the dress shop and developing a good reputation are important for the owner to have success.

  1. Find out what you need to do to obtain the proper licensing for opening a new business in your city. Once you complete all of the paperwork and have your business financing in place, look for a location for the pageant dress shop. A strip mall or large shopping mall are two potential locations to consider for the shop.

  2. Stock the shelves of your dress shop with the items you want to sell. If you are primarily ordering dresses from a supplier, order a sufficient supply for the clothing racks in your store. If you are going to make the dresses yourself or with a seamstress, set up a workroom in the back of the store and make sure you have the dressmaking supplies you need.

  3. Have a grand opening sale to help launch your pageant dress shop. Send out flyers to potential clients and advertise in the newspaper. Tell your friends and relatives so they can spread the work about the grand opening.

  4. Attend pageants in your city and surrounding area so you can promote the dress shop. Take samples of your work for potential clients to inspect. Make sure the pageant director gives you permission before you attend a show in a business capacity.

  5. Create a website and use social media to help promote your dress shop. Work with a website architect if you need help with the construction of your website. Many pageant contestants are avid users of social media, so try to make your dress shop one of the places they consider for their pageant clothing needs.
