How to Operate Catering Services

If you enjoy cooking and preparing food for social gatherings, then a catering business might be a perfect fit for you. Operating a catering service does mean more than just providing great food. You need to understand the financial side of the business as well so that your catering company can thrive.

  • Gain knowledge on state requirements. Make sure that you understand the requirements for providing services in your area. You need to have the necessary permits and licenses in order to operate your catering business.

  • Monitor costs. Stick to your budget by making a list of your catering menu. Your list should include the ingredients as well as the price for those ingredients. Look for ways that you can cut costs and still stay competitive. One example is by offering meals with less meat and more pasta or vegetables.

  • Create a marketing plan. Develop partnerships with other vendors in the business such as party planners or event coordinators. Create brochures detailing your services. Design a catering website and be sure to include photos of events that you have catered.

  • Monitor equipment use. Make sure you have a plan in place to locate replacement  equipment in case of an emergency. Set funds aside for such an emergency so that it will not interrupt your budget.

  • Monitor your budget. After each event that you have catered, do an assessment of your finances to make sure that you stay on budget. If you went over budget on your last event, then look for ways to avoid that same scenario in the future. Using a computerized accounting system is a great way for you to keep track of things like staff salaries, food expenses and equipment costs.
