How to Operate a Dressmaker Sewing Machine

Using a Dressmaker sewing machine is good for a beginner to use as well as an advanced sewing specialist. It is important to begin by using the basic features and then move into the more advanced features once the basic ones are mastered.

  1. Push the center button to disengage the hand wheel. This will allow the bobbin to be threaded. The hand wheel is located on the right side of the machine and manually controls the treading of the machine.

  2. Choose the correct color and weight of thread that will be used in the first project on the machine. Set the spool of thread in the pin at the top of the machine. Take the thread and pull it around the hook labeled with the number one, and pull it through a hole on the bobbin. Secure it by pulling it through the fastener. Lock the hand wheel, and press the foot control pedal to thread the bobbin.

  3. Cut the thread from the spool, and remove the bobbin from the machine. Lift up the bobbin cover and insert the bobbin. Push it over to the left until it clicks into place. This will let you know the bobbin is securely fastened and should work properly.

  4. Thread the spool of thread through the guide numbers one and two and then through the needle. Push the center button to engage the hand wheel. Holding on to the bobbin thread and spool thread in the left hand, turn the hand wheel one full turn to engage the stitch, and be sure that the needle is all the way up before stopping.

  5. Raise the pressure foot on the machine to insert the fabric, and lower it again.

  6. Choose the stitch type based on the pattern that is being used. The stitch types are typically found on the machine as well as in the user’s manual of the machine. Begin to sew once the stitch option has been chosen.
