How to Organize Craft and Hobby Materials
Organizing your craft and hobby materials makes sense for several reasons. When everything has a place, you spend much less time looking for different materials and supplies and more time pursuing your hobby. Even if you don't have a lot of space to work with, it's possible to put your supplies in order and easily retrieve them any time you like.
Bringing some order to your collection of craft and hobby materials is often a good thing. When all the materials are properly organized, it’s much easier to find what you want when you want it. Even if space in your house or apartment is limited, there are still ways to create an ideal storage space for all your creative supplies and have access to them whenever you like.
- Sort your craft and hobby materials into specific groups or categories. Paper items go into one group, while fabric goes into another. Adhesives may constitute one group, while basic sewing items like needles, thread, basting tape and scissors go into another. The object of this strategy is to provide some idea of how much room you will need to store supplies relevant to specific types of projects.
- Designate a storage space for the sorted craft and hobby supplies. If a craft room is out of the question, consider turning a small closet into the storage space for your supplies. Even apartment dwellers with no room to spare can consider purchasing under-bed containers that can easily accommodate a considerable amount of space for craft materials.
- Purchase and label containers for the materials. Simple plastic containers with snap-on lids are available in several sizes. Use the dimensions of the designate storage space to decide how many and what size containers will fit. Use computer generated adhesive labels on the outside of each container, so you know what is housed in each one.
- Arrange the containers in your storage space. Make sure the labeled sides of the containers face outward, so you can quickly identify the right one to pull for the materials necessary. Return the container to its designated spot within the storage space once you’ve removed everything you need. This will reduce the time spent looking for items and also aid in keeping your space clean and tidy.
