How to Organize Storage Shelves

Half the battle of organizing storage shelves is learning to create a space that is functional and a good use of space. Shelves can easily become a catchall, especially if they are located in a closet or other out of the way area. The most important things to consider are how you will store items and what you will store on your shelves.

Before you start organizing, the shelves look at what items you intend to store there. You will need to pick up a few supplies to make the shelves appear neat and organized. There are many great storage containers on the market. Baskets are another wonderful way to create useful storage space, without sacrificing looks. You can change the liners on baskets, if you decide to reuse them elsewhere later on.

Supplies

  • Labels (either stick on or paper labels)

  • Pen or permanent marker

  • Shelves (if you do not already have them)

  • Baskets or plastic storage boxes

Directions

  1. Pick your storage space and install the shelves. Make sure that the space makes sense for the items you are storing. Leave space at the bottom to store heavier items on the floor, if needed.

  2. Separate your items into groups. Each pile of stack should represent one storage container.

  3. Label your containers and place the items inside in a neat and organized manner.

  4. Place items you use frequently at eye or shoulder level. They should be easy to remove frequently, without having to bend or reach for them.

  5. Place heavier items near the bottom of the shelves or on the floor space.

  6. Place less often used items on the top shelves.

  7. Step back and enjoy your well-organized storage shelves.
