How to Organize a Child's Closet

Organizing a child's closet is a nightmare onto itself. It ranks close to the level of scary as the idea of your child's first date. But it is a necessary evil and on the bright side the earlier you train them to keep their closet organized the better.

How to Organize a Child's Closet:

Step 1: Take everything out of the closet. Take this opportunity to vacuum the floor and clean out any cobwebs that were hiding in there.

Step 2: Begin sorting through the clothes first and place them into piles. Place the clothes that are too small in a pile or in a bag, and then place clothes that are too big in another pile.

Step 3: Hang the clothes that fit back on the closet racks and separate them by length and type of clothing. For instance, hang shirts beginning with short sleeves and end them with long sleeves. Hang long coats and/or dresses at the other end. Continue until you are finished with the clothes.

Step 4: Place small bins in the bottom of the closet for toys. If your child is a reader, consider labeling the bins according to the type of toys it will hold. If your child is not a reader, consider labeling the bins with pictures of the toys. For instance, to make this transition fun for them, you could draw pictures on your computer depicting the types of toys and tape them to the bins.

Step 5: Sort through the shoes and place the ones that do not fit in the pile with the clothes. Line up the ones that fit along the side of the toy bins.
