How to Organize a Pet Adoption Event

Encouraging people to adopt pets is a great thing to do because it saves the pet's life. It also enriches the life of the person adopting the pet. Volunteering at an established event can be rewarding, but organizing your own event can be even more so.

Items Needed:

  • Pet feeding dishes

  • Pet food

  • Pets in need of homes

  • Chairs and tables

  • Flyers

  • Contracts for pet adoption

  • Brochures

  • Business cards

  1. Find the location where you’ll host your pet adoption day. Call your local veterinary hospital or pet shop. Pet stores often support pet adoption events. If you don’t want to do all the organizing, you may be able to join an event that is already organized. See if you can host your pet adoption event at your town or county fair or another area event by contacting the event’s coordinator. Since you’ll be working for a charitable cause, you may even be able to find space at a local event free of charge.

  2. Make sure the location you choose has plenty of shade and shelter in case of inclement weather. You’ll need to make the environment you choose as stress free as possible for the animals.

  3. Provide your animals with all the essentials. Bring crates with plenty of room for the animal, food, water and some toys to fit comfortable inside. Bring litter boxes for the kitties.

  4. Bring as much information as you have on each pet at the event. Pet seekers will have questions when looking for a pet to adopt, and the more information you have for them the better. Let the attendees know the pet’s medical history, including shots, worm treatments, spay or neutering, and any additional care.

  5. Provide your guests with flyers and business cards on the table so they can easily take your information. Be sure to set up your tables in a spot where interested people will not bottleneck or block the view of the animals up for adoption. Be sure to keep the chairs behind the table for when you need to sit so they don’t clutter the area.

  6. Bring plenty of adoption contracts for people wanting to take pets home.

  7. Raffle off desirable items to raise money and create interest for pet care at your animal shelter. It is also recommended to have a drop box for cash donations and pet care items.
