How to Overcome Social Anxiety

Having social anxiety is nothing to feel ashamed about. Millions of people suffer from the condition each year. People with social anxiety are very uncomfortable with being in a room full of people and may find simple things that other people take for granted such as dining out very hard to do. There are things that can help those with social anxiety overcome the situation.

  • Talk with a therapists or someone that specializes in treating the disorder. Many people may not feel that you have a problem and will encourage you to just get out. If they do not understand the situation they will not be able to help you.

  • Educate a close friend about the condition. If you have just one person who understands, they can help you when needed. This person can accompany you when you go out to social gatherings. They will be able to know when you are feeling high levels of anxiety and will talk you through the situation.

  • Start by going into small social gatherings. You may want to try small churches. Choose a place where you know people are kind and will try to help you. Try sitting in the back of the church to start, so you can exit as many times as needed without making a big scene. If you cannot stay no longer than five or ten minutes that is a good start.

  • Learn breathing and meditation techniques to help you through anxiety attacks. Learning to take small breaths and relax will help ease the attacks.

  • Consider taking anxiety medication. Not too many people like to do it, but it can help you if you are suffering from severe social anxiety. Talk to your medical doctor or a licensed mental health professional about the best medication for you.
