How to Paint Antique Kitchen Cabinets

There are several ways to give your kitchen cabinets an antique look. The techniques are quite easy and can be accomplished by one person. It is also inexpensive to do; you will need very few supplies. The supplies needed will depend on the technique you choose to use on your cabinets.

Materials needed for antique kitchen cabinets:

  • Screwdriver

  • Sandpaper

  • Paint in a light color, such as ivory

  • Glaze in a brown color

  • Rags

  • Crackle medium

  • Paint in your choice of color

  • Paint brushes

  • Mixing bowl with mixing stick

Painting antique kitchen cabinets:

  1. Remove the cabinet doors. Mark each cabinet so you now where it goes once you are finished working on it. Take the hardware off the doors and keep it where it will not get lost.

  2. Clean your cabinet doors well with soap and water.

  3. Glaze your doors by mixing your light colored paint with your glaze. Mix these in equal parts in a bowl. Using rags dipped in the glaze paint mixture, rub the rags on the cabinet door. Work in small areas and use up and down strokes. Once you wipe the paint and glaze mixture on, take a clean rag and wipe it off. Some will remain on the doors, giving an antiqued look.

  4. Crackle your doors by painting them with paint in whichever color you prefer. Let that coat dry. Paint over the door with crackle medium. As the paint dries, it will crack, making your cabinets look old and antiqued.

  5. Paint your cabinets any color you like. Take sandpaper and sand spots on cabinets that would normally get wear and tear. Around the edges would often be worn in antique cabinets. Near the handle may also have some wear. Use your imagination to think about the parts that would have been touched a lot and worn in everyday use.
