How to Paint Desks

Painting a desk adds durability and attractiveness to old furniture. Since the paint or finish on a desk can become worn over time, painting the desk freshens the look and seals the wood. Painting is simple and allows you freedom of expression regarding color and design.

Items Needed:

  • Latex or water-based paint

  • Primer

  • Paintbrush

  • Rags

  • Detergent

  • Drop Cloth

  • Paint roller

  1. Remove the drawers from the desk and disassemble the unit as much as possible. This helps to clean and remove dust. Remove hardware, such as handles or knobs that are easily replaced after painting.  If you choose to not remove the hardware, such as the drawer pulls, then apply painters' tape to deter unwanted paint.

  2. Remove dirt from the surface with a dry cloth. Clean the desk thoroughly with detergent and water to remove any soaked-in grease and grime.

  3. Sand the wood surface to help remove excessive dirt, and to allow the primer to soak in and adhere to the wood boards. Remove any dust from the boards with a clean dry rag.

  4. Place a drop cloth to the area to prevent paint splatter.

  5. Apply a water-based primer according to the manufacturer’s instructions and allow to dry. There are spray-on styles of primer, as well as brush-on variety.

  6. Select a brush or a roller to apply a thin coating of paint and allow to dry. Apply a second or third coat if needed, allowing the paint to dry between coatings.

  7. Use stencils or free-hand painting techniques to add images and character to your dresser.

  8. Replace the drawers and the hardware after the paint dries.
