How to Install Exterior Vinyl Siding

How to Paint Exterior Vinyl Siding

Siding on the outside of your home is usually the same color for years. If you are looking for a change and would like to paint your exterior vinyl siding there are a few things you need to think about. While changing the color can give your home a brand new look, it is very important that you understand that you will have more maintenance after you paint.

  1. Choose the right type of paint. Because vinyl siding is exposed to many different things like weather, extreme temperatures and sunlight, you will need to choose a type of paint that contains urethane. This type of paint will hold up better than others. You will have a bit more maintenance after painting your siding. Vinyl siding that has not been painted over has a type of weather resistant finish. Keep in mind that if you paint your siding, you may have to paint again in about 10 years.

  2. Clean the vinyl siding thoroughly before you start to paint. It is best to hand wash so that there is not a lot of excess water being left behind in the creases of your siding which can cause some problems later when you are ready to paint.

  3. Wait for a overcast and somewhat cool day to begin painting. These conditions will help the paint bond to the siding. Most of the time people think it is best to paint when it is hot and sunny out. That is not true for most cases.

  4. Apply at least two coats of paint to help prevent fading and chipping.

  5. Enjoy your new look for your home.
