How to Paint Sheet Metal for Home Decorating

Unfinished metal has an industrial look that is not particularly decorative, especially for the home. Painting the sheet metal gives it a new soft look that can be stylish when applied correctly. This makes the piece look attractive while maintaining its function in the home. It also protects the piece from rust and weathering.

Tools:

  • Oil-based Spray Paint

  • Primer

  • Sand or Bead Blaster

  • Sand Paper or Steel Wool

  1. Learn what kind of surface that you are working with. Smooth surfaces do not keep the paint for long while very rough surfaces do not have an even finish.

  2. Roughen the surface if it is smooth to enable the paint to adhere to it. Do this by bead blasting or sand blasting. Use thick steel wool or extra gritty sand paper is a sand blaster is unavailable.

  3. Ensure that the surface is clean before applying any paint. White vinegar is good at cleaning metal sheets.

  4. Apply a coat of an anti-rusting zinc agent on the surface to prevent rust. If the piece needs any treatments such as welding or cutting, it is advisable to do it before painting.

  5. Apply a primer coat that contains self-etching acids, or use a coat of diluted white vinegar to ensure the surface is ready for the finish.

  6. Spray paint the metal using high quality oil based paint that adheres to the metal. Use metallic bold paint and glitter paint to highlight the underlying piece, if desired.

  7. Make sure that the paint is evenly distributed to avoid peeling off after it dries.

  8. Apply a final topcoat for a smoother finish. If you choose to apply an epoxy topcoat, mix it well so that it dries and hardens properly.

  9. A clear gesso topcoat is good for covering the exposed parts that are not covered in the paint. You can also finish with a touch of gloss to create a smooth and shiny finish.
