How to Paint Six Panel Doors With High Gloss Paint
Six panel doors seem intimidating to paint because the panels often have several ridges that can trap excess paint. By painting with a thin layer of paint and preparing the surface well beforehand, you will have no trouble painting a six panel door properly.
Things You'll Need:
- Drop cloth
- Screwdriver
- Sandpaper
- Damp cloth
- Primer
- Paint brushes
- High gloss paint
- Paint stirrers
- Paint tray
- Small roller
- Spread a drop cloth underneath the door. Make sure that there is plenty of clearance between the door and the drop cloth.
- Remove the door's hardware using a screwdriver.
- Sand the door with a fine-grain sandpaper. You only need to rough up the existing finish and remove any existing paint.
- Wipe the door down with a damp cloth to remove any sanding residue. Allow the door to dry thoroughly before continuing.
- Choose a primer that works with the type of paint you have already chosen.
- Paint the primer on the door in a light layer. Let the primer dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Different primers require longer or shorter periods of time to fully set. If you paint the door before the primer is completely dry, the paint may not adhere properly and you will have to paint the door again from the beginning.
- Mix your chosen paint thoroughly with a paint stirrer and pour it into a paint tray.
- Use a small paint roller to paint the door. Use a paint brush to work paint into the nooks and crannies of the panels. Apply only a thin layer of paint to avoid streaks.
- Let the first coat of paint dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Paint the door with a second coat of paint as you applied the first coat.
- Allow the door to dry completely before reattaching the hardware.
