How to Paint Storage Racks
Storage racks are generally used in pantries, basements, attics, garages, and laundry facilities. Since the paint or finish on the racks can become worn over time, it is a good idea to paint the racks from time to time to freshen the look, and seal the wood or metal of the racks. Painting is simple and allows you freedom of expression regarding color and design.
Items Needed:
- Latex or water-based paint
- Primer
- Paint brush
- Rags
- Detergent
- Drop Cloth
- Paint roller
If the painted racks are for an indoor shelving:
- Remove the racks from the wall unit or stands and disassemble the unit so that the planks and pieces are easy to lay a smooth coating of paint onto the pieces.
- Remove fixtures, such as handles or knobs that are easily replaced. If you choose to not remove the rack from the wall, apply painters tape to any walls or floor molding to deter unwanted paint.
- Clean the racking shelves thoroughly with detergent and water to remove any soaked-in grease and grime.
- Sand the wood surface to help remove excessive dirt, and to allow the primer to soak in and adhere to the board. Remove any dust from the boards with a clean dry rag.
- Place a drop cloth to the area to prevent paint splatter.
- Apply primer according to the manufacturer’s instructions and allow to dry.
- Select a brush or a roller to apply a thin coating of paint and allow to dry.
- Apply a second or third coat if needed, allowing the paint to dry between coatings.
- Replace the rack after the paint has been allowed to dry thoroughly.
If the painted rack is meant for outdoor or garage shelving:
- Brush a thin layer of polyurethane to protect the wood from rain, wind, and sunlight.
- Use exterior paint instead of interior paint for added protection from the elements and weathering.
