How to Paint Your Appliances

Painting old appliances instead of buying new appliances is one way of remodeling the kitchen without spending a fortune. The refrigerator, dishwasher, stove and microwave can all be safely painted to match. This is a messy but simple project. Appliance paint comes in heat resistant durable finishes and in many colors.

Items needed:

  • Dish soap

  • Hot water

  • Appliance spray paint

  • Eye protection

  • Ventilated respirator

  • Masking tape

  • Sander

  • Coarse sandpaper

  • Medium grit sandpaper

  • Cloth

  1. Clean the appliance with dish soap and hot water.  Make sure that all grease and dirt is removed from the surface. Let the appliance dry completely.

  2. Move the appliance outdoors if possible because it is much better to use spray paint instead of painting with a brush and seeing brush strokes on the finished product. Wear eye protection and a ventilated respirator.

  3. Remove any hardware that is removable or mask with tape if it is not possible to remove.

  4. Sand the surface of the appliance with course sandpaper. Wipe the appliance with medium grit sandpaper. Wipe down the appliance with a cloth to remove any dust and residue.

  5. Use appliance paint bought from your local hardware store or home improvement center. Paint the appliance according to the paint manufacturer's directions. Allow the paint to dry at least 24 hours before putting hardware back on the appliance, removing the tape and returning it back to its original position in the kitchen.
