How to Paint an Iron Antique Bed Gold

An antique iron bed is a great find style wise. Most of these beds come out of a basement or attic and require some TLC when you get them home. With a little elbow grease, you can turn an old rusted bed into a designer bedroom centerpiece.

Painting an antique iron bed gold requires a little bit of time and work, but most of all, if you can envision the final product, you will enjoy the process.

Supplies

  • Drop cloths

  • Mask (optional, but will help to reduce inhaling possible harmful particles)

  • Wire brush

  • Steel wool

  • Spray paint and primer in one (pick a line meant for metal surfaces)

  • Rags

Instructions

  1. Choose a well-ventilated workspace; a garage or shed will work best.

  2. Remove dust, paint and dirt with the wire brush and steel wool. You will not have to rub hard; just gently rub and allow the small grains to fall off. This will help the paint adhere to the iron and reduce bumps and peeling.

  3. Clean the iron with rags dipped in warm water. Rinse and wipe again. Be sure to get as much of the fine dust as possible. Run a dry cloth over the iron to be sure you haven’t missed any spots.

  4. Set bed frame upright. Prop with wood blocks or cardboard boxes if need be.

  5. Shake spray paint and press button spraying the bedframe. Keep moving; do not linger in one spot as the spray paint will drip and run down the iron.  Move the paint can in a back and forth motions as you spray, creating multiple light coats of paint instead of one or two heavy coats. A thick coat will look thick and caked on when dry.

  6. Allow to Dry overnight before moving.
