How to Park in a Parking Lot

There are some safety measures to take when parking in a lot. Many drivers do not pay attention when they drive through a parking lot, which can lead to a fender bender. It is a good idea to park away from other cars whenever possible to avoid potential door dings.

  • Look for a parking space that is convenient when you pull into a lot. For example, if you are going to a large mall, look for a parking space that is near the center of the mall instead of parking near one end of the building. Watch out for pedestrians as your drive through the lot.

  • Use your turn signal when you find a place to park. Check your mirror to see if there are any cars behind you. Turn into the parking space and center your vehicle between the lines.

  • Pull your car in far enough so the rear bumper is in the parking space. Once you get out of your car you should make sure you are not too close to the vehicles next to you. While you may be careful when you open your car door, other drivers often may ding your door if you are too close to their vehicle.

  • Park away from other vehicles whenever possible. One way to avoid getting your car door dented is by parking next to a curb. Pull up to a curb on the driver’s side and park less than a foot away from it. The passenger side of your car will then be far enough away from a car that pulls in next to you.

  • Check your mirror when you are ready to leave. Other drivers who are looking for a space may not see you back out. Be ready to brake if you notice a driver is not paying attention as you back out of your spot.
