How to Pay Your Television License

TV licensing is required in Great Britian in order to tune in to BBC networks, watch Internet TV, cable and other television non-recorded programming.  Licensing to own a TV is not required only to access certain networks.  All citizens and residents of Great Britain and Commonwealth nations are required to obtain annual TV licensing.

  1. Take your most current TV licensing bill and cash, ATM debit, credit card, checks or other method of payment with you.

  2. Locate a pay-point outlet.  Inquire at grocery stores, liquor stores and other retail outlets if they take TV licensing payments. You may also pay via mail or at participating banks.

  3. Review the payment options, either monthly, annual or quarterly payments.  Debit cards remove the payment directly from your checking account.

  4. Pay the licensing fee using the fee schedule you choose.

  5. Inquire about the TV licensing savings card. This card allows you to set aside money out of your paycheck toward the TV licensing bill.  By the time you need to renew, you may have already saved enough to pay the bill in full.

A Little History:

The BBC was formed in 1922 to offer British residents news, entertainment and public information.  At the time the BBC was formed, the radio license was enacted requiring ten schillings from the public to fund the non-profit BBC. As of 2010, the cost for color television is $192.00 U.S.D and $64.00 U.S.D annually for the TV licensing.  The penalty of using TV service without licensing incurs fines or possibly jail time for offenders.
