How to Pay for Medical School
Medical school has quickly become one of the most expensive educational endeavors in existence. The average doctor graduates with around $100,000 to $200,000 of debt in the form of student loans. However, doctors are some of the most highly paid professionals in the health field and there are ways to avoid much of this debt.
- Consider any grants or scholarships that you may currently qualify for. There are hundreds of grants and scholarships available to medical students with funding totaling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is important to understand your options with this form of funding and apply for as many grants and scholarships as possible before moving on to other sources of funding.
- Search for conditional scholarships. Conditional scholarships are those that offer funding in exchange for a service to be performed following graduation. This service usually takes the form of a set period of employment with the company or organization that provided the scholarship. Hospitals and the military are well-known for offering this sort of arrangement. You will need to honor the work commitment in order to secure this type of funding; doctors who do not hold up their end of the bargain are usually required to repay the money in full.
- Look for positions that offer debt forgiveness programs following graduation. Many hospitals and companies will assist you in repaying your student loans for the duration of your employment. This is an excellent way to quickly repay your loans without being forced to donate a great deal of the well-deserved salary that you have worked so to earn.
- If you have exhausted every other option, you can always borrow money in the form of student loans. It is never ideal to enter the workforce with debt, but in the medical field you should be able to find a high-paying position that will allow you to quickly repay your debt.
