How to Pick Carpet Colors With Decor

Choosing carpeting is one of the biggest home decorating decisions to be made. Not only do you want your carpet to match the rest of your home decor, you also want it to match any decor you might decide to change.

  1. Look at the decor throughout your home and decide what the main colors are of each room. You will want to choose a carpet color for the entire house, not just room by room, because that gets really expensive fast. Pick out the most neutral color of each room or that would best match each room, and keep that in mind once you go to the home improvement store.

  2. Pick up a color wheel or a book of carpet samples from your local home improvement store. Take the carpet around to each room to see how the colors you're thinking of look in each room under the lighting and with all your things. This is often the best determining factor of which color to choose.

  3. Select the type of carpeting you want. This may limit the color choices that you have. There are several types of carpeting to choose from. They range from shag, which is very thick, to burbur, which is shorter and nice for high traffic areas.

  4. Choose a color that will match the decor of all your rooms based on the color choices the type of carpet you've chosen comes in. As a helpful tip, while white carpeting is guaranteed to match any kind of decor throughout your house and any decor you may change, it is not advised if you have pets, children or anyone living in your home with dirty jobs. Your carpet will be ruined.
