How to Pick Fish Types

Having an aquarium is a wonderful hobby and most people start small with fresh water fish. There are some aspects to keeping an aquarium as well as the fish you should purchase. All fish do not live in harmony in tank, so you will need to make sure the fish you have are compatible with any new fish you add.

  1. Decide on the type of aquarium you
want to have. When it comes to fish you have tropical, which
generally require pumps and heaters and then you have coldwater fish
that do not need as much to take care of. Goldfish are coldwater
fish while tropical fish are normally the more colorful that you see
in an aquarium or pet store.

  2. Choose the correct size tank.
There are some tropical fish that will only grow as large as their
environment allows. If you go with tropical fish, you will need a
heater, lights, and a pump at a bare minimum. There are complete
kits that have everything you need to get started. Keep in mind that
all tropical fish do not eat the same diet, but you can find those
that do so you only have to buy one type of food.

  3. Head to your local fish store that
has the various fish you want. Many have employees that are
passionate about fish and can help educate you on the best fish to
buy when you are first starting off. You want healthy fish that are
young and easy to care for initially. As you gain more experience
with the fish, you can add to them by choosing those that will mix
well with the fish you have. Choosing incompatible fish can lead to
fighting or one fish eating the other, so be careful when selecting
the fish species that go inside your aquarium.
