How to Pick a Business Financial Advisor

Finding a business financial advisor is necessary for any business owner to succeed. An advisor can help the business owner with a variety of investment and financial planning, which will help the owner to reach short and long-term goals. Interviewing several advisors may be the best way to decide which service the owner should use.

  1. Call an accountant or attorney that you use for personal advice. Find out if they also offer business financial advice. Ask for a reference if they are unable to directly meet your business needs, since they may outsource business advice clients to another firm.

  2. Check your local bank to see if a business financial advisory service is in place. Find out if the location of the service is at the bank or at a separate outside location. Ask for a brochure that lists what services the bank’s advisory offers.

  3. Look online to find business financial advisors that service your area if you are unable to get a reference from a source you trust. Check the reputation of an advisor by contacting the Better Business Bureau in your area. You can also contact your accountant, attorney or banker to see if they have heard of the advisor.

  4. Call a business advisor that interests you and set up a meeting. Ask the advisor if the initial consultation is free or if there is a charge. Find out what financial records you need to bring to the meeting and make copies for the advisor. Take any marketing or other pertinent business materials with you to the meeting as well.

  5. Meet with the business financial advisor and discuss the future goals for your company. Ask how much the advisor charges for the type of service you need. Hire the advisor if you are happy with the value, or contact other advisors until you find one that you like.
